Resource Guide

ASSIST Central Services is delighted to launch the ASSIST AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool, which offers an enhanced, user-friendly search experience on assist.org. Search by individual courses to quickly view transfer and eligibility approvals as well as articulation information—all in one place. In this resource guide, we’ll review the terminology used in the tool, helpful tips to support your use, and different scenarios to inspire and guide your exploration.

This tool is designed to search through published articulation data on assist.org in academic years 2023-2024 and beyond, as well as full transferability data. To use the tool, focus on one course at a time by providing the AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool Assistant (AI Assistant) with either a California Community College course or a course offered at a participating 4-year college or university. The AI Assistant will help you locate articulation information with other institutions and, where applicable, full transferability approvals.

The AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool searches only within published ASSIST databases and, for articulation, begins with academic year 2023-2024 and beyond; it does not search the World Wide Web. This ensures accurate articulation and transferability information. Therefore, you will not find information about course scheduling, course modality (e.g., in person, online, etc.), or any other institutional information located outside of the assist.org website.

Finding the new AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool on assist.org is easy! It is located in the middle of the page, in the lower half of the screen, under the articulation agreements search box. To get started, simply enter your course information or question in the box. This will open a chat with the AI Assistant. If you aren’t sure where to start, we recommend visiting the ASSIST Resource Center Students, Faculty, & Staff tab to locate more information, including two ASSIST AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool instructional video tutorials.

Terminology

To use the tool effectively, it helps to understand common transfer and articulation terminology used by the AI Transfer Articulation & Exploration Tool Assistant.

  • Articulation is the process of identifying courses that are comparable between institutions.
  • A sending institution is where you completed the course you wish to transfer, usually a California Community College
  • A receiving institution is the 4-year college or university where you plan to transfer. The receiving institution determines the credit you’ll earn for the coursework completed at the sending institution.
  • The Academic Year is the year in which you completed the course. For example: if you took a course in the Fall 2025 term, that would be the 2025-2026 academic year. However, the tool will recognize Fall 2025 and locate the appropriate articulation.

  •   Transferability area approvals indicate the designations a course holds; for example, whether a course is CSU and/or UC transferable, or approved for a general education pattern like Cal-GETC.

Tips for Using the Tool

The list below includes useful tips to help you get the most out of your search experience.

  • Having a college transcript available is an efficient way to quickly and accurately locate information for completed courses.
  • You will receive a faster response if you include the academic year up front, as well as the sending and receiving institutions, when performing a more targeted search.
  • The more data you provide about the course, the more thorough and accurate the results will be.
  • While data from your chat session is not stored by ASSIST, please don’t include any sensitive information in the chat.
  • You can print your search results by clicking the printer icon, or share them by copying this link with the link icon.
  • If you need help while using the tool, click on the question mark icon for more information and to find a link to the ASSIST Resource Center Students, Faculty, & Staff tab to access video tutorials.

Example Scenarios

Scenario #1: If I’m curious about how my community college course will transfer to the universities I’m considering applying to, I can begin by asking, for example: “How does STAT C1000 taken at American River College transfer to UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, and UCLA?” Since we didn’t provide an academic year (AY), it will ask us for the applicable AY.

After you complete your search, the results will display on the right side of the screen. You’ll see Transferability information listed first – this is the information you can locate on the assist.org homepage in the “Search for transferable courses” box. Beneath it, you’ll be given previews of all articulation information for your course, with links to all the major, general education, and/or department articulation agreements where that articulation appears. We always recommend viewing the full agreement for context and clarity. Simply click on the link to be taken to the live agreement on assist.org.

Scenario #2:  I’m trying to find a course at a California community college, referred to as a CCC for short, that is accepted for a 4-year institution’s course. Maybe you can’t get into the course at your 4-year college or university, or you want to take a CCC course over the summer. In this example, we will explore articulation for Cal State Long Beach’s BIOL 200 course. I can use the same chat window or launch a new one and type in: “Show me community college courses offered in academic year 2025-2026 that articulate to CSU Long Beach’s BIOL 200”. The tool will ask you to confirm options for sending institutions. It will provide you with button selections for the five closest institutions, and additional buttons for other options. For example, All CCCs, All, etc. Make your desired selection. For this example, “All CCCs” was selected.

The results for the first five CCCs then appear in the right-side window pane, in alphabetical order by the community college’s name. At the bottom of the results, there’s a button to “Load Next 5 Institutions.”

If desired, you can further narrow down results, perhaps to CCCs where you have already completed coursework. Type in the chat: “limit results to Orange Coast College and Irvine Valley.” Now instances of articulation with only these two community colleges display on the right.

To toggle back to earlier results in the same chat session, use the “View” link next to the eye symbol in the blue Articulation Results box; it will become the Current Display.
